Meritxell Huch is the Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Dale Fellow and Group Leader at the Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge. Her research is focused on the contribution of stem cells to the regeneration of adult tissues (liver and pancreas) as well as on the development of organoid cultures for these endodermal organs (stomach, liver and pancreas). She has established a new culture system that maintains the self-renewal status of liver stem cells in vitro, while differentiation towards functional liver cells can be induced by modulating key signalling pathways. Using similar approach, her laboratory established long-term cultures for mouse and human pancreas organoid cells and demonstrated that pancreas cells, when transplanted in vivo in combination with embryonic pancreas, differentiate towards endocrine cells expressing insulin, glucagon and somatostatin hormones.
